Image Dimensions vs File Size: What's the Difference?
Dimensions are how many pixels wide and tall. File size is how many bytes it takes to store them. They're related, but one doesn't fix the other.
Two different measures
- Dimensions (also “resolution” in the pixel sense) are the width and height in pixels, like 600 × 600. They describe the picture’s grid.
- File size is the storage it takes: bytes, usually quoted in KB or MB.
A form that says “200 × 230 px, 20 to 50 KB” is asking for both.
What changes what
| You change | Dimensions | File size |
|---|---|---|
| Resize or crop | Changes | Usually changes (fewer pixels, generally fewer bytes) |
| JPEG quality | Stays the same | Changes |
| File format | Stays the same | Often changes a lot |
| DPI tag | Stays the same | Basically stays the same |
| Picture content (noise, detail) | Stays the same | Changes |
So a 600 × 600 photo can be 40 KB or 400 KB depending on how detailed it is and what quality it was saved at. Halving both sides leaves a quarter of the pixels, which tends to cut the size sharply but not by an exact factor.
Why you can’t set both separately
If you first compress to 50 KB and then resize, the size changes again. If you first resize and then compress, you might shrink the pixels a second time or leave it blocky. The reliable order is: fix the dimensions first, then search for the best quality that lands in the size range. That is what KB + Dimensions does: it cuts the picture to the exact shape (crop or fit), then searches for the highest quality that is safely inside your KB range, and re-reads the file to check every rule.
What if the limits can’t both be met?
If the pixel size is fixed and the KB limit is very small, it can be impossible for a detailed picture. The tool says so rather than pretending. Then either relax one rule, or ask the portal whether a smaller pixel size is allowed.
The reverse also happens: a plain image can be lighter than a minimum KB. KB + Dimensions can raise it, and tells you which method it used.
Which tool when
- Only dimensions are wrong: Resize Image.
- Only the KB limit is wrong: Compress Image.
- Both are specified: KB + Dimensions.
- DPI is also in the rules: that’s a separate setting; see DPI vs pixel dimensions.
