How to Resize an Image to Exact Pixel Dimensions
To hit an exact size, you choose what happens when the picture's shape doesn't match: crop it, pad it, or stretch it. Cropping is usually right for photos.
The one decision: what to do with the shape
Say your form wants 200 × 230 pixels and your photo is a 3000 × 4000 phone portrait. The shapes differ: 200:230 is about 0.87 wide-to-tall, the photo is 0.75. To get exact pixels you must pick one of three behaviours.
| Choice | What happens | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Crop to fit | Scales until it covers the frame, then cuts off the overflow | Photos and faces |
| Fit inside | Scales until it all fits, then adds bands of a background colour | Documents, signatures, anything you can’t lose an edge of |
| Stretch | Forces both sides; the picture is distorted | Rarely; only if distortion doesn’t matter |
How much gets cropped
For the 3000 × 4000 photo:
- To 200 × 230: scale to 200 wide, which gives 267 tall, then crop to 230. About 14% of the height is removed.
- To 600 × 600: scale to 600 wide, which gives 800 tall, then crop to 600. A quarter of the height is removed.
That’s why placing the box matters. In Resize Image, Crop to fit lets you drag the box to choose which part is kept. For faces, keep the head and shoulders inside it.
Steps
- Open Resize Image and add your picture.
- Type a width and a height. If you type only one, the other follows and the shape is kept.
- If the shapes differ, pick Crop to fit, Fit inside or Stretch, and drag the box if cropping.
- Run it. The tool re-reads the result and shows the original and final size side by side.
Pitfalls
- Sideways photos. If the picture is rotated, use Rotate first. Phones store an orientation tag, and WillItUpload applies all eight orientations upright, but check the preview.
- Making it bigger. Asking for more pixels than the picture has enlarges it. That adds pixels, not detail, so it looks soft. The tool warns you before it runs. Start from a bigger original if you can.
- A file size limit too. Exact pixels often come with a KB limit. Use KB + Dimensions, which handles both at once.
- Transparent PNGs turn white when saved as JPG. Save as PNG or WebP under Advanced to keep transparency.
