How to Clean the Background of a Scanned Signature

What cleaning does

Signature Cleaner works on how dark each pixel is. It:

• Finds the signature and ignores the page edge, shadows and ruled lines.
• Corrects uneven lighting and whitens the paper.
• Strengthens the ink without changing its colour, unless you pick black or blue.

Your signature is only cleaned, never redrawn. The strokes keep their shape.

The options

What it isn’t

It isn’t a general-purpose background remover. It’s built for ink on paper, and it relies on the signature being darker than the background. A signature on dark or patterned material, or a faint pencil mark, will not clean well. A coloured pen on coloured paper may need the Strong setting, or a better photo.

Get a better photo first

• Sign on plain white paper with a dark pen, larger than you think you need.
• Photograph it straight on, in daylight, with no shadow from your phone.
• Fill the frame; a larger, sharper photo gives a sharper result.

If it goes wrong

• It couldn’t find a signature. Retake it on plain white paper in daylight with a darker pen, or drag the box around the signature yourself.
• Part of the signature is cut off. Drag the box larger. Parts separated by big gaps can be treated as noise.
• The result is soft. The photo was small. A larger, sharper photo gives a sharper result.
