How to Reduce a Signature File Size in KB

With a signature, the maximum is rarely the problem. A clean one is mostly white and compresses to almost nothing, so it's a form's minimum size that tends to bite.

Why signatures are different from photos

A photo has detail everywhere, so it needs many bytes. A signature on a clean white background is a few dark strokes on blank paper, which compresses extremely well. A signature photo straight from a phone is a different story: shadows and paper texture add bytes. A cleaned-up one can be tiny.

So with a form that says “10 to 20 KB”, you can fail in two ways:

  • Too big because the photo still has paper, shadows and a large pixel size.
  • Too small because a plain white image is lighter than the minimum.

Too big

  1. Clean the photo with the Signature Cleaner so the background becomes plain white.
  2. Fit it to the form’s pixel size with Signature Resizer. Smaller pixel dimensions mean fewer bytes.
  3. If you only have a size limit and no dimensions, use Compress Image with a maximum.

A 140 × 60 pixel image has only 8,400 pixels. Even at a high quality it doesn’t take much to stay under 20 KB.

Too small

Some forms set a minimum size to discourage tiny, unreadable files. A plain image can come in below it, and a smaller picture can’t be “compressed” up. Signature Resizer and KB + Dimensions can raise a file that is too light. The methods, in order, are:

  1. A colour profile.
  2. Faint paper-like grain, only if you’ve allowed it.
  3. Invisible padding.

The tool lists which one it used, so you can see exactly how the file was brought up to size.

PNG or JPG?

Most signature forms ask for JPG. JPG saves best for the ink-on-white case when quality is set well. PNG is lossless, so a PNG signature at a larger size can exceed a small maximum. If the form says JPG, give it JPG.

Check before you submit

Open the finished file and zoom in. The strokes should be dark and unbroken. Then run the Image Requirement Checker to see the size, format and dimensions pass or fail.
